Another preschool teacher here and I absolutely agree with finding a school that has a PreK 4 class for him. Neither the 3 or 5s class are appropriate.

+1 this makes no sense. What are all the other 4yos at the school going to do? If there aren't any, that's a problem because no matter what class he's in, he'll be an outlier. If there are others, why aren't they just grouping them together? Even if there are not enough 4s for their own class, they could combine them with another class and make it a 3/4 or 4/5, which is not atypical at a preschool.

This school sounds inept if they are simply not offering an age appropriate class and then asking parents to pick on a case by case basis between the 3s and the 5s. This is their job.

I’m a preschool teacher and I recommend that you find a preschool with a pk4 class. As it is there will already be a big spread of ages when he is in the appropriate age classroom
If you move him up he will be with kids sooo much older that repeating that class in future won’t help him in the present. (Unless he is in Montessori where the classes are designed to be mixed age)

+1 don't put him with younger children in a 3s class when he's 4. I'm sure you can find another preschool.

If your intention is to hold him back anyway, you may as well put him in the 3s, since they will be his peer group.

Repeat the 3s, he will not be ready for what the 5s will be doing, even if he does attend 5s he won’t benefit much if he’s not ready.

I personally wouldn’t hold him back for kindergarten unless he has developmental delays. Go to kindergarten on time, if you still feel strongly repeat kindergarten.

Do not have him in a 3s when he’s turning 5. My 4yo September son is in a similar boat and he will either repeat 4s or do a 5s program. 3s would be far too young!

3 s class will get boring very quickly unless he can switch over in Feb or so.

Son has a September birthday. Current preschool will not have a 4s class for next year. Offering a spot in the 3s were he will be 4 to 15 months older than the other classmates. Since I was considering doing a 5s and holding him back for kindergarten anyways, is it better to repeat the 3s or do a 5s.
