+2 Incredibly useful for getting a realistic picture of decisions being made for students at your high school.

OP here. I didn’t even know that’s what Naviance was for. Can anyone else weigh in on what else it’s used for? There was a description for parents but it basically said nothing.

You can use the advanced search to find colleges meeting your search criteria (size, location, major, etc.) You can see where other students from your school applied, which can help identify appropriate schools in the region to consider. The scattergrams are the most useful to get an idea of whether or not a student is a good fit academically and how selective a school is. They aren’t a prediction, but if there is a sea of red checks with a couple of green ones, that tells you chances a very low. A sea of green checks and no red has high chances of acceptance. For the average student applying to the main state schools, there will be a large number of red and green checks, usually without a clear cutoff - you can’t predict on those schools.

Beyond initial research, students will use it yo keep track of schools they are interested in and ones they are applying to. The use it to request letters of recommendation and transcripts from the school, and can keep track of what has been sent.

It is the best information you can get.

IMO:

Even at your high school, naviance isn't that useful or predictive because it doesn't reflect whether students submitted their test scores or not as part of their applications. And I believe that the GPAs are the final GPAs not final 11th grade GPAs which are what the colleges mostly like see. Lastly, the scattergrams aggregate up to 10 years (depending on how your school sets it, I think) and the admissions landscape has changed significantly in that time. So it's worth a look but my DC didn't base any decisions on it.
