4.0 is only half the picture at most of the state schools that offer generous aid. ACT/SAT scores must be high as well. I think 32 gets a big award at Alabama and 34 or 36 qualify for near and full rides.

My kid with a 4.1w GPA received good merit offers from Arizona, Iowa and Ohio. My niece and nephew at WVU also received a good bit of merit (with even lower stats in one case).

DS JUST received notification from UMN for two scholarships totaling $25k per year. 4.5/1560/NMSF. Mom and dad are thrilled. Not sure the kid is.

The SUNYs are offering in-state tuition for OOS students. University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Temple, Purdue has pretty reasonable OOS tuition, University of Minnesota, University of Utah, Utah State, Michigan State.

my 4.0 kid didn’t even get into UNC, let alone Morehead scholarship. Try Indiana or Clemson.

It all depends on your kid but no reason to not identify options, OP has not given us a lot. OP, there are a lot of privates that give merit and are also strong for pre med. Read The Price You Pay for College. That book was written for parents with OP’s question.

Please share more details - 4.0 weighted or unweighted (and if weighted what’s the “bonus” for advanced/AP courses)? Any test scores? APs? Are you in need of full ride or something to make it on par w in state? Is there anywhere she won’t go? Geographic preference? It sounds like you’re looking for info on out of state flagships - is that correct? Thanks as this will all be helpful. No matter what, if you’re only thinking “top” (if you care about USNWR rankings) publics e.g. UVA, Michigan, UV system, UNC the answer is almost certainly no.

Anyone have recent experience with strong merit aid packages being offered at a state school? My daughter is a strong student interested in premed but we can’t afford privates and although she’s hoping private schools will give her merit aid, I’m not so sure. I noticed Arizona is offering very strong merit aid for out of state strong students, like 32K a year. Anyone have any others to recommend?.
