If there is a median in the road where the bus stops, the answer is you can turn in any direction. The law bizarrely does not apply to roads with medians, EVEN WHERE THERE IS A BREAK IN THE MEDIAN AT AN INTERSECTION. I specifically called the police and asked them this because I used to live one block down from an intersection where people constantly turned right in front of the bus and would beep at me to turn in front of it. The police told me it is in fact legal and there is nothing they can or would do to prevent it

Virginia's law says "in all direction." At the intersection, kids get off the bus and cross the street, so even if you make a right turn away from the bus, you still endanger street crossing students.

Don't do it. If a cop catches you or you're captured on camera (cell phone), you'll get a ticket.

That’s probably how I got the impression it’s allowed which is in fact my delusion. Should have had my coffee before the morning drop off. Uhhhh fingers crossed I am receiving a ticket for this.

I don’t think you will. Camera is not positioned to take photos in that position.

Yes, I concur.

Kids can be unpredictable and this could have tragic results.

Even if the car behind me honked their horn > I still would not turn.

This uses the phrase "any direction" which would imply that a side approach, i.e.an intersection, would count.

"stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction"

But OP is not "approaching" she is turning away from the bus.

She is approaching the intersection with the bus. That is the approach they are talking about. If she is already turned, and the bus pulls up, yes she is free to continue. But if she has not made her turn, she is supposed to wait until the bus stop sign is put away.

Think of the bus stop sign as an ALL WAY red light. Not like a normal stop sign where you can stop, and then roll. It's a red light, no turn on red situation.

No. If you are at an intersection with a 4 way stop, and a school bus is AT the intersection (not back a distance) with it's stop sign extended, it's a a halt on all traffic through the intersection.

I had one that stopped by my house at a 4 way stop, so I looked this up awhile ago. The stop is not just about where the kids are getting off, it's all directions.

I don't know the law, but I wouldn't do it. Kids are running for the bus when they see it, from all directions. I doubt it's legal but it's definitely not right.

I don’t know and was curious so I googled and found this. I’m not sure if this helps.

How far is the intersection from the bus. I would think you should just stop and wait.

At a four way intersection, a school stops with extended stop sign and flashing lights. I am on a intersecting street, to the right of the bus driver. If I make a right turn, I’ll be driving in the same direction as the school bus, in front of the bus. My question is, in VA, is that allowed?
