At our child's school they asked every student to name 3 people from their school team they'd like to be in a cabin with. Everyone was put into a cabin with at least one person they requested to be with. Our child liked the activities, but found it sort of a grind. "Like being at school, but the day was longer." I don't remember how many adults were in each cabin.

Outdoor ed is not mandatory. Your child would go to school instead and do other activities, or classes if the teachers are there. Many 6th grade teachers chaperone and go along on outdoor ed, so many 6th grade teachers are out of the building. Therefore, kids who don't do outdoor ed are given other assignments/activities to do during the day. Most students do enjoy outdoor ed though, and most kids participate. Very few opt out.

Also, some schools do not allow parent chaperones. It is up to the school.

You will be assigned to your child’s group for all of the activities, but if your child is the opposite sex, you won’t be in their cabin. Chaperones sleep in the cabins with kids of the same sex. Teachers do not sleep in the students’ cabins.

You'll have to check with your school to see when/where they're scheduled to go. It can be any time of year.

It's not "camping". It's environmental science in the environment.

Is outdoor ed in 5th grade? I have a 5th grader and haven’t heard anything about it

Our 6th grader went to Camp Letts for outdoor ed. The cabins are heated, but she was happy to have her sleeping bag and not just a blanket. The food was pretty good. There are various choices. The first night she said some people had trouble getting to sleep, but that it wasn't too late and the next night people went to sleep pretty much right away. She brough earplugs in case the cabin was loud, but didn't end up using them. She liked the lessons and being outside so much - but she is an outdoorsy kid. She also said it went by super fast.

Can’t answer about Letts specifically, but your child will have long days and be kept busy. There’s almost no downtime. The first night, everyone is excited and they have trouble falling asleep and usually get scolded to quiet down several times, but eventually they do. The next day starts early and goes into the evening and they’re usually so exhausted that they go to sleep much quicker the second night. Make sure your child has comfortable footwear for hiking in any kind of weather, extra socks, and warm enough clothing for the forecast. If there’s a chance of rain, a plastic poncho comes in handy.

DC went there 3 years ago. I think the kids slept. The cabins were definitely heated (I had worried about this in advance because they went in December). I don’t remember any complaints about food.

Anyone's kid been yet? My kid is having some extreme anxiety about it, so trying to get a preview. Specifically:

1) Do the kids sleep? Or is everyone up late in the cabins?
2) How cold are the cabins?
3) Any reviews on the food?
