This is a pointless discussion without some details about turnout. The youth vote is always liberal. But the youth vote also historically doesn’t actually go to the polls in presidential elections, much less midterms. Was turnout higher this time?

I was a registered Republican and in the young Republicans (even a page at a convention) until my mid-20s.


My 80 year old parents were never Republicans but they became more radical (left) as they aged.

I always had a theory that it's not so much younger people switching to be more conservative when they're older, but younger people who are apolitical becoming conservative or center-right when they age into the demographic that votes more. Of course there are those who do change, one way or another, but typically under 30 turnout is very low, and activist progressives remain activist progressive, but end up outnumbered by those who never used to vote but start voting more after age 40 when they prioritize taxes and 401ks and individual finance.

Gen Z and younger millennials may buck that trend, because they aren't reaching the same financial stability milestones that boomers did in the 80s. People under 35 generally have more sense of instability and uncertainty than their parents did.
