It’s posted as one grade. There are five assignments and this is one of them but it’s worth 60 percent of the grade.

Five assignments for the whole marking period is not allowed. The minimum is 13.

My kid is in a similar situation. Six assignments for the quarter, one of which was worth 55%. The big assignment was due late September, but the 50% grade was not entered until very late in the day on Monday. (I checked Monday afternoon, and the kid had an A. Tuesday, a C.) My kid struggles with organization, but I don't know how we can help when the teacher waits to input the problem grade until the very last minute, 6 weeks after the assignment was due.

This will be easy to fix since it is a clear violation of the grading policy. Email the teacher.

Maybe the letter of the law but teachers can come up with a way around this if they're determined.

I don’t think most teachers are determined to find a way to do fewer than 13 assignments a parking period. If anything, teachers I speak with are annoyed at the limitation of assignments. However, the hypothetical teacher who wants to get away with putting fewer than 13 grades in Synergy is out of luck. The parent just has to yelp all the way to central office. And surely, other parents in the class will join in, too.

That is one way to break up grades, but then the teacher/dept risks posting too many grades. There are limits to the number of assignments in each grading category.

Is it actually posted as one grade, or is it broken into parts? A bigger project can be broken into multiple parts due at different times and entered as separate grades.

Regulation IKA-RA says:
"Assigning any single task/assessment that counts for more than 25 percent of the marking period grade" is prohibited.

No there's a grading policy that says no single grade can be worth more than 20% ot something. Ew

Do you know where I can find confirmation of that?

Click on the grading regulation: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/grading/report-cards-secondary.aspx

It actually says no more 25%.

Ignore the "ew". On a cell phone.

One of my 8th grader’s teachers just posted an assignment to parent vue that dropped his grade from 100 percent to 90%. That single assignment was worth more than 60 percent of the grade. I thought I’d seen here somewhere that no single assignment can be worth such a large proportion of the grade. Is that correct?

I realize it’s still an A but it might be useful to know for the future.
