You can get a decent reformer for the price of a Peleton. The nicer reformers are still on par or less than what most people spend for a full home gym.

Haha! I’m not any kind of dancer and love Pilates. Discovered it in my late 30’s. Had no idea what it was before then.
But yes, it was associated with ballet dancers early on.

I did Pilates 20 years ago when l lived in Europe and it wasn’t expensive and there was no equipment at all. It was all isometric exercises— originally developed for injured soldiers who could not do other exercises in the hospital?

I liked it because l don’t like cardio but also it was nice to reinforce muscles for good posture. I should try it again but not in the fancy way.

You don't need to deal with the masses, you get a great toned body with the cardio or weights.
It works, but is expensive mostly because of the "hand holding" that naturally goes with the practice.

If I could afford it, I’d be at a Pilates Reformer studio 3x a week. But I can’t, so I’m not. I wish I could though, and miss those days when I did.

I found a Pilates studio I can go to every day. Each class is a little different. It hits all the major muscle groups. The instructors are kind and helpful. I’m in and out in 45 minutes. It’s the best money I’ve ever spent. It’s a lot cheaper than physical therapy. It exercises all these core, hip, side, back, etc muscles that I don’t do on my own.

I think it's less that rich people specifically like Pilates as that doing pilates in a studio with reformers and a lot of 1:1 coaching can be incredibly expensive so only fairly wealthy people can invest in it as a long term exercise plan. Regular gyms, yoga, and outdoor sports are all more economical.

Pilates also works best if you are doing it several times a week. A class might cost $30-40 a pop, 1:1 coaching significantly more, so to do it "right" at a dedicated pilates studio with reformers (so not like a weekly pilates class at the gym, which tends to be a bit more diverse), you need to be ready to spend $1000 a month on pilates.

I used to take aerial classes (silks, rope, hoop, etc.) and it was similar -- just a lot of rich housewives. They'd get really into it and attend class several times a week (again, we're talking $30-40 per class, more like $80-100 for a private or semi-private) and often bought their own equipment. I don't think aerial arts are uniquely appealing to rich ladies, but IME it was mostly wealthy middle age women and young professionals without kids (who tend to have more disposable income to spend on exercise and hobbies).

Is it expensive?
You don't just go to an ordinary gym, that's why.

What an odd question?

Is this true? Maybe it's something that usually requires a teacher and people with money can pay for classes?

What makes it attractive to rich women?
