No, the colleges are not aware of each other. However, the ED agreement (assuming it's the same as it's been for years) has the applicant agreeing that, if accepted, the school can share the applicant's name with other institutions.

Submitting ED2 is a potential waste of application fee. Only reason I can think of to submit an ED2 app so early is if there's an early scholarship deadline (though even then, one probably put it as RD and then convert to ED2 later if rejected from ED1).

OP. Clarification - ED1 submitted as per guideline and was signed by the counselor. Apparently Common app allows you to submit EDII through the portal but it hasn't been signed by the counselor yet.

No, the schools do NOT know where else your kid has applied. Plenty of students apply ED to one school while also applying EA to several others, sometimes being accepted to all of them.

I don't think they can, but you should withdraw at least one app because it could come back to bite you later, and it would be the honest thing to do.

You can only apply ED to one school at a time — you cannot apply ED II at another school until you first hear from your ED I school. You can apply EA to any school, but if you get into your ED school, you have to withdraw all the apps at the other schools.

At my kids’ MCPS high school, if you apply someplace ED1, I do not think you can apply someplace else ED2 until you have been denied or deferred from the ED1 and you withdraw the ED1 contract.

How can you send EDI and EDII at the same time? Did you not sign a contract for each?

I am asking because my DC sent ED1, EDII and bunch of EAs all at the same time. I am concerned that the EAs will be automatic denial or at best waitlist if the schools can see that there is an EDII app. Am I overthinking this?
