There are also good Quaker boarding schools in Pa., much closer than New England. The George School and Wesstown

Even though you aren’t in NYC, you could join Parents League and get unlimited advising appointments. They have a good number of boarding member schools, and just had their boarding school fair a few weeks ago. https://www.parentsleague.org/schools/members

Attended NMH and had an amazing experience. Strongly recommend, and no you don't have to be a super jock or very extroverted.

I also went to one of these, as did my siblings, and it was a world-class education.

That said, only recently have I started to realize it wouldn't have been the best choice for me, had I had a good local option. And I would not send my own kid if she weren't naturally social and outgoing.

If your kid is smart but shy, a very good local private would be far less taxing, emotionally, unless all her friends are also heading to the school. (But since this board isn't aimed at Greenwich, Southport, and Westport CT moms, I doubt that's the case.)

What a stupid post. How could any response to such a generic question be even remotely helpful.

It depends on the kid. Some are very academic. Some are therapeutic. My kid had specific activities that needed to be at the school.

Understood. I'm open, & just starting my research for high school. Non-religious.

Well, locally, there's Madeira and Episcopal. St. Andrew's School in DE, also not far.
The more elite, prestigious schools are St. Paul's, Andover, Exeter, Choate, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Lawrenceville.

But there's also a lot of boarding options that aren't on the uber prestigious list which have merit. Again, it depends what you're looking. WE looked at schools for DD. Toured and stayed at some. In the end, she opted not to apply, but friends who attended the above schools have nothing but positives to say.
