There aren’t that many spots. Acceptances can seem arbitrary and sometimes hinge on factors external to the candidate such as whether parents are nationals. This is due to the way WIS balances its classes. Best advice is to apply and see what happens if indeed you are interested. If you do, also make sure you’re aware of what the IB is and how it differs from other programs. All top high schools offer college level classes and are different from average American schools. The IB has specific ceilings, floors, points of flexibility and inflexibility that make it worth researching in advance to make sure your child truly wants it. In terms of competitor schools some also apply to Sidwell, others to British International School. To compare WIS to other DC privates is to compare apples and oranges

Bumping since I’m curious too. What other schools are kids who apply to WIS in 9th applying to?

So… looking for context here. How does it compare for a student who would be a strong candidate at Big 3? Meaning - one who would be in top 10% academically at Big 3 HS and taking the harder level classes there . (Not fluent in two languages but a solid Spanish 3 student by 9th)

This is no longer true. In fact they have actively tried to diversify the population with more private sector jobs in hoes to change the mentality on giving to annual drives to increase a very small endowment. There has been a significant change since just before pre-covid.
