Well, she wants to leave Virginia. So the 100+ programs are cheap options, for better or worse.

There were no in-state schools that had the desired major, so an OOS school was the best school for my student.

That's assuming she gets in. She can ED W&M, but I don't think you can just take admission for granted no matter what stats you have. There are a bunch of OOS schools, including privates, that are similar to W&M and of similar quality. Meanwhile, the closes in state school is probably Mary Washington and that isn't really a comparable school.

If a student might be competitive for UVA/WM or on the cusp, they can likely get into a very good public out of state. We supported our kids wanting to get out of Virginia. It's turned out to be a great decision. They are settled and happy elsewhere.

Ours preferred OOS options to VT given program and interests. We are fortunate enough that cost was not a material part of the decision. Very happy with the OOS choice.

I'd start with what she might be interested in for a major and go from there.

She might be a good fit for OOS LACs-there are so many. And a lot of them do offer merit aid for a good student.

Is there an area she is targeting? That also might help to narrow things down a little.

There are also plenty of great OOS publics.

JMU was actually my own second choice from OOS - I applied EA and then got into their honors program. I wound up at a smaller school in the T50 in the end, but JMU is a great school and is a very different feel from NoVA.

My DD is a freshman this year at a private school in the midwest. She was never interested in going to school in VA despite there being such great options. She did receive significant merit aid so it made sense for her to attend.

UVA and W&M are crapshoots. So are comparable OOS schools. If you don't get in ED, you're best off casting a wide net.

If her stats are competitive enough to get into VT (I get that varies by major) and W&M she is probably eligible for great merit money at some out of state schools.

DD is a junior and starting to look at schools. Stats wise probably competitive for VT, JMU, W&M, not UVA. If your FCPS kid went to a public/private out of state, what was the thinking behind it? DD wants to live “somewhere other than VA” which we get but VA has so many great schools that it is tough to think about paying twice as much to go elsewhere (we are full pay but have other kids as well).
