Reading grades come from benchmark reading assessments and some other reading assessments that they take like for example answering questions from a book they read etc
Science and social studies come from quizzes, projects and some assessments.
In elementary school, teachers make sure that the students who were absent take the assessments and submit assignments once they return to school. I have not heard of any elementary schooler’s missing assignments bringing their grades down.
In early es a lot of it is just made up too since there are rarely any objective metrics
