You pin a sign to him that says "I refused to wear the costumes my Mom bought me".

Because he hated the "cute" costumes we got him, I think due to sensory issues and him hating any and all costume. We essentially need to put him in regular clothes and find a "costume" idea to go around it. We don't have time to go get another costume that he'll also likely hate. His hair is also blond and naturally mullet like right now, so Garth and Joe Dirt came to mind as "ideas" he could be just in his regular clothes.

My now 8 year old has always hated costumes and dress up, so we have always gone the plain clothes route. One year he was a farmer with jeans and a flannel shirt, one year he was a soccer player with his actual soccer jersey. This year he is Calvin and his little brother (who loves costumes) is his Hobbes.

Don't overthink it. Just let him enjoy the parts he enjoys.

For that age, I always bought skeleton or pumpkin pajamas. The one year I got complete refusal to wear a costume was actually when my kid was 4! It's a crapshoot, so I always have some backups.

Comfort is king. Don't choose costumes where a headpiece *makes* the costume or it's super fussy. Having a pajama backup is always a good idea. Bonus: they can just wear them as pajamas too.

I think the PPs are just saying that this is for you and not him and not worry about whether he's wearing anything.

There’s another neighborhood Halloween thing in the afternoon that we may or may not do, plus actual Halloween tomorrow, which will essentially be our first after having to cancel last year bc hfm. Any ideas for how we can turn his regular clothes into a costume? Our current ideas are Garth from Wayne’s world and joe dirt. He has a few nicer outfits, sweaters and buttons down etc. any costume idea for those?

Have you asked him what he would like? If your ideas are Joe Dirt and Garth, it sounds like his costume is more for your enjoyment than his. If he has a choice, he will be more willing to wear it.

My kids would have had no idea how to answer that at 19 months.

He’s a year and a half, he cannot articulate what he wants, so we generally are going with what amuses us.

To pp above - Calvin and Hobbes is a great idea, esp w his hair, so think we prob will go w that, thanks!

19 month olds are inherently cute and the main thing, both for his sake and everyone else’s is that he’s happy. As pp suggested, orange and black would be great. A Halloween tshirt would be great. Pajamas can be sleepy/bedtime boy. Does he have a favorite printed shirt? That could count as his costume. He’s Elmo, or a dinosaur/paleontologist, train/engineer, puppy/vet, etc. Put him in a red t-shirt, muss up his hair, and he can be Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. Put him in a white button down and pin a “tie” (felt scrap?) yo it and he can be Dilbert. Put him in a white tshirt, roll up the sleeves and his pants cuffs, and he can be a 50’s greaser. Both of you wear jeans and the same color tshirt/sweatshirt and be twins. Basically, let him wear whatever he wants and make up the theme around what he’s chosen.

A teenager might get some looks skating by without a costume, but everyone will ooh! and ah! over him regardless. You’ll probably want to keep it short because he won’t have much stamina.

Are you on your local but nothing group? Tons of costumes available for pickup today/tomorrow morning.

Also you mentioned having dress clothes — FBI agent/SS person if you also have sunglasses? Or a name tag can take you far in whatever clothes.

Just dress him in orange & black. Done.

Or don’t. Go enjoy in whatever he’s wearing.
