NP I imagine a condo would allow the OP to stay near to friends, doctors, DC culture etc, while not having to bother with leaves, snow, stairs, repairs, and landscaping and would generate lower utility bills. Some of those houses in Potomac Falls are like palaces and can be quite remote. For me, downsizing would make me get rid of all the junk in our house as well.

I would also wait and see what happens when the Metro comes to the Town Center

I have been at a bunch of the RTC outdoor concerts lately and noticed quite a lot of people in their 60s, 70s or maybe older, and it seemed like they lived in the Avant or one of the other luxury apt buildings right there. I think it would be a great spot to retire.

We downsized to Reston from Loudoun County and I know a couple of others who have done the same. The appeal is the location, trails, activities, and walkability. I feel like I'm living in a community here unlike our former area. I also like the diversity here, including age. I walk all the time and see the paths being used by everyone from kids on bikes, to young couples walking their baby to older folks.

There's also a diversity of housing styles here that you don't see in Loudoun and I like that not every neighborhood looks the same.

A lot of it is inertia. I've lived here since 1999, I know where everything is, I have friends around here, I like the location of my house (walking distance to Lake Anne), I've got my house the way I want it, and it would be a pain in the neck to move.

I moved here in the first place because I like "contemporary" style homes - I can't stand "colonial" style or split-level - and it's hard to find them elsewhere in the area.

Otherwise I'm not sure Reston has any huge advantages over Potomac Falls.

I’d love to live on one of the lakes but it seems like lots of stairs in those row homes for a retired person.

It seems like a good option to me too. We're in Arlington and can move a bit further out when we retire but I don't want to go too far since we have strong connections with friends, organizations, etc.

We currently live in Loudoun County (Potomac Falls), in a SFH, and we think we'd like to stay in Virginia when we retire and downsize.

Instead of moving south or west, we're starting to think about a townhouse or condo in Reston. We visit often, and it has metro, lots of parks and restaurants, etc.

When we retire, we could easily afford something near Lake Anne, or the town center.

Has anyone done this? What's it like to be a retiree in Reston?
