This is the exact document I’ve been using along with my MCEA building rep with admin. Admin keeps doing bad math and think I should just switch my lunch with my planning period once a week for this meeting but that would not give me 27 minutes of planning and they would have to find coverage for my classes so I can make up the missed time.

Hit the “report” button lower right on the mis-posted reply and ask Jeff to delete. He will, especially if the same person reports it that posted it.

I agree with some PPs that you need to educate yourself about your child’s rights. Not familiar with sped, but it seems getting a formal IEP entitles you to services through the school, and is definitely something you should consider given your child’s diagnoses.

However you seem very concerned about what goes into your child’s permanent record, which is probably why you’re hesitant to get an IEP and hesitant to submit bullying forms. That seems a little upside down to me. You need the bullying to stop yesterday, and for her special needs to be accommodated right now.

OP what are they pushing back on? Classload, or attendance at meetings?

Attendance at a weekly (sometimes biweekly) meeting that takes place during my only planning period. Our after school faculty and department meetings go right up to the 2 1/2 monthly limit. Also, as a PT teacher I’m supposed to attend meetings at a ratio equal to my allocation. So I should only be attending 60% of the meetings that a FTE is required to attend.

I also have issues with class size and number of preps. Even though I only teach 3 periods, because they combined courses I am teaching 7 different curriculums. This requires more planning than if I were teaching 7 different courses separately.

Also, being new to MCPS I’m capped at entry level 8. So I’m making about what a full time para would make. I’m putting in that many hours to try and stay afloat but it’s not worth the stress!

Met with my building union rep and they were very helpful in starting the negotiations with admin. This also takes up more of my time that I need to be answering parent emails or completing loads of required IEP/504 paperwork.

I am part-time in elem. I made it clear during interviews what I was able to do and luckily my principal has been very supportive. I would contact your union rep and see if you can get help. It’s only October so there’s plenty of time to turn things around.

I have part-time teachers in my department and when they were hired we clarified their start and end time using the chart provided by MCEA and how many team meetings they would attend every week to be able to have all of their planning time alloted.

I have been part time, .4, in middle school and my admin was great about it, we went over the page in the MCEA contract regarding meeting and planning requirements and whenever there was something very important during an after school meeting, I could Zoom in for a part of it.

Yes, I was part time and this is why I left MCPS. There’s a rigidity in place. It ended up being near full-time work for part-time pay. I now work part time in an independent school.

I was a part time elementary teacher for several years (.7). I was held to the same staff meeting attendance and PLC requirements as full time teachers, even though both required I begin my day 75 minutes before my contracted start time. I had to push back against having a morning duty that began before my duty day and took away almost all my planning time (my admin did agree to remove me from the duty bc of the contractually required planning time that did not fit anywhere else in my schedule but said I was to be “on call” every day to arrive early to do the duty if staff was out and coverage short). Working part time in MCPS is just not worth it in my experience.

I was part-time for a number of years. I went through many principals during that time and no one really understood the expectations and requirements of my schedule. I was .6 and taught three classes. The biggest issue was when we had shortened weeks or different schedules. Some years I would have to make clear which meetings I would be attending (department/team/PLC) because I could not attend them all.

I’m new to MCPS but have over 20 years teaching experience. My school doesn’t seem to understand the contract requirements for part time teachers. To be fair, my current secondary position used to be full time. I’ve already contacted MCEA and they told me the exact page and language from the contract that protects my planning time but admin continues to push back. I only know a few other MCPS part time teachers and they seem to have much more supportive admin. Looking to hear what others are experiencing.
