I once asked a friend what a religious procession in my neighborhood was and ended up converting to that religion. Questions are good, answers from generous people with the knowledge to answer are welcome.

Today is the first day of the week-long holiday of Sukkot. They were carrying a lulav and etrog (consisting of a palm branch, willow, myrtle, and an etrog, which is a not-tasty citrus). At a couple of points during the service, they shake the lulav and etrog and march around with it. Tomorrow is the second day of Sukkot, so you will likely see the same thing again tomorrow, since the first two days of the holiday are supposed to be celebrated in synagogue.

On these days and for the rest of the week, people will also eat and maybe sleep in a sukkah (a temporary hut) in their yards to symbolize the temporary dwellings of the Israelites as they wandered the desert.

Lulavs (and etrogs/citrons) for the sukkot holiday. As part of the holiday, there is a special choreography/march during the morning services.

Are they decorating for Sukkot? Maybe they were bringing decorations for the sukkah.
