My kid made the Improv team and is in the ensemble in the fall play. She went to the Bob Ross club once but now has no time with the play. She plays a sport outside of school so has a pretty full plate. She also is in the yearbook class and has made some friends there (not an extracurrciular).

My kid did debate team and science Olympiad. Debate is intense. The time commitment can be similar to a sport.

Some kids are not good at sports and/or don’t like them (the two often go together!).

Debate team? Art club? Yearbook?

When my son gave up baseball and soccer at the end of middle school, I worried about what he’d do in HS. In 9th, he signed up for a bunch of random clubs but he didn’t follow through with them. Then in 10th grade he decided to join the newspaper and happily it stuck. The kids on staff were really friendly and became his social circle. It ended up being the best part of HS for him and he gained leadership experience as an editor.

^rarely plays because he doesn’t start. He’s still enjoying it.

These are cut sports at our high school. The only no cut sports I know of are football, wrestling and cross country if you make the cut off time. My 9th grader joined football and will wrestle for that reason. He rarely plays in games and had no idea if he will actually wrestle in tournaments but he’s met a lot of kids.

What is Metmunc?

My 9th grader is running cross country, and is involved in the school's music program. I think that since both of those things are adult run, in a way that student clubs aren't, they've been easier for him to figure out. I don't think he's gone to a club meeting. I think he's doing HW during those slots.

Absolutely nothing and I'm trying not to worry about it.

IMO the best options for non sports kids are drama (either on stage or backstage/tech), marching band, or student government. The other clubs all meet fairly infrequently and don’t lend themselves to close friendships.

I know this will vary by high school but curious what school-related activities your 9th grader is doing? Mine has gone to a few different club, etc. meetings but hasn't found his thing yet -- and isn't a sports kid. Thanks
