You shouldn't have said that because it sounds defensive and it's not true. When I go home to visit my parents my mom and I always take a trip through her jewelry box - it's just fun to do - and there's a LOT of 80s gold jewelry that just doesn't look like what anyone would wear now (she doesn't wear it now, either).
But def wear what you like! I'm sure your coworker was kicking herself for saying that as she walked away - sometimes dumb things slip out of your mouth and then you spend years in therapy trying to get yourself past it. I hear.
