We are an FA family and try to volunteer whenever possible - weekend events, preparation for fundraisers, etc. We are grateful to receive the aid and try to make that clear by giving time when we can. But not everyone can do that. We know another FA family where father is a mechanic and the mother works in retail, so they have to work weekends. I'm sure the school doesn't hold it against anyone. It is primarily the wealthy, SAHMs that run the volunteer events, but I assume that is because they have plenty of time to do so.

PS - what they ARE paying attention to is the annual fund participation. When those come, you should find a value you feel comfortable donating. It is important on the school metrics to get % of parents donating high, so it's great if a FA family donates (even something like $25). They will love you for this and it will be noticed.

This doesn’t sound right. The FA families usually work very hard. The wealthy moms have a lot of free time during the day (SAHMs and household employees). So who is more likely to attend? My guess is, it’s not the parents who have a tenuous safety net, and who are at risk of losing their jobs if they go to all these events.

I feel very aware that small but important decisions about continuing aid might be influenced by the school's desire to keep us enrolled. I'm not at all sure that it works like that, but that is how I think about it. This thinking also prevents me from opting out of events that might intimidate me but I might actually enjoy.

Can any admission folks or anyone that is familiar share how it works?

They don’t expect anything really except they would like all parents to attend as part of the community. It is your school too and don’t separate yourself. You have every right to attend events and be involved in your kids life as anyone else. That is if you want to attend. If you don’t then don’t worry about it but please do not separate yourself.

Do schools want you to come to all the events and volunteer alot if they giving you financial aid. I know one family that don't go to events but what do schools expect?
