I am in my 30s and a hiring manager and would without a doubt hire someone over 50 if their experience and skills were appropriate or there was the potential for them to quickly build the skills.

So nice to know some of you hire 50+!

Yes. In fact, it’s a common career move for people worried about ageism.

And health insurance in retirement

I just looked at USAjobs and see why you say that.

All the hiring preferences--military, overseas, etc--are new to me since I last looked ages ago. Yikes. Seems like not many jobs are open to the public!

Yes, that is true, actually. But there are positions available to All US Citizens. You should hire a USAJobs resume expert if you’re serious about getting in.

Same with mine. Age would not be a factor and the difficulty isn’t necessarily hiring preferences (not usually relevant in my office) but whether you have on point experience.

My agency has hired a number of people over 50. They are looking for relevant experience.

This. I hire at my agency and we often bring in mid career or later. It can be hard to take a pay cut at that age though, and you won’t be able to maximize the pension. You will be able to take the health insurance into retirement, though, so that’s huge.

No such thing as minority preference. Stop please.

Veterans preference applies for specific instances and for specific types of vacancy announcements.

I believe Veterans preference applies to all vacancies except a few specific exceptions
