I’ve used Uber for years- I rarely tip & I’m rated 4.9.

If the driver goes above and beyond (one carried my luggage up 2 flights of stairs in the rain!) I tip well, in cash. But I think most drivers won’t rate you poorly as long as you’re on time, polite and don’t bring food/alcohol/ drama into their car.

I always leave a big tip. I often wonder how the Uber drivers make any money. A ride from NW to the mall is $15 and takes 20 minutes. Then they have to drive to you to pick you up ... Even if they can do 2 per hour, that is $30/hour. Taking out Uber's cut, the gas, the wear and tear on the car, the insurance, the car payment,... they probably make less than minimum wage.

I am grateful for the convivence.

Omg, it asked for a tip? Walk next time. I've take Uber only once because I drive usually but left 50% tip. The ride was short 7-8 blocks, and I'm glad he even bothered with me.

That's not true, they rate you before they see if you tipped or not.

But it is customary to give a tip, just like you would a taxi driver.

Yes you need to tip unfortunately. Not having to tip was an early benefit but it is not the case anymore.

Yes. You always leave a tip. I was in North Carolina last week and my drive was not much from the airport to High Point. I tipped the amount of the fare. Don't be cheap.

Is it expected that I leave a tip? Say the ride is pleasant but there is nothing out of the ordinary that happens. No bottle of water, no men’s, no fascinating chitchat. Just stay safe, pleasant drive. I was under the impression that Uber was a no tip situation, but when I was done with my ride the app asked me how much tip I wanted to leave.
