I think you can do knee strengthening exercises too and probably should avoid the moves that put weight on them as much as you can. It sounds like you're damaging yourself. Extra padding won't help.

I have hardwood floors and use 2 yoga mats. Regardless, my knees hurt in any position that I’m on my knees. Better yoga mats? Would installing gym mats help? Got a better solution?
