We eventually stopped giving gifts when the overseas postage was more than the gift value. To be honest, I can't even think of a gift I want and am trying to get stuff out of the house.

Your judgment is a really ugly look, OP. I know you think you’re hiding it well with this relative and with others, but you’re not. You really aren’t better than anyone else because you give more expensive gifts. It’s sad that as an adult, you’re wasting time with this stance.

I will see you and raise you one better: my mom would get gifts for my cousins, like shirts I wished she'd get me (the cousins were 1 and 3 years older than I am). The following year, the aunt would re-gift those gifts to me. Used.

I find that people in the DC area expect much more expensive children's gifts than are given elsewhere. $20 seems fine.

Then she'd put a bunch of them in a box, wrap them up in nice paper and a bow, and expected you to admire her thriftiness and thank her for her thoughtfulness.
