I think it is a mix of college students, teachers, and retired professionals. The current tutor is a grad student.

I'm OP. Yes, I do have a copy of the MCPS Math Tutor List. My problem with that list - my DC doesn't have a the best teacher for AP Calc AB hence the need for a tutor. This teacher is notorious for being a bad teacher in the school

Guess who is on the list of MCPS Math Tutors?

That leads me to think...what if the other teachers on the list also aren't great teachers? Why would I want them to tutor my child?


They are not all the same person and as an intelligent adult you really should know that.

Is mcps math tutors the same as Tutor Me that is free through mcps? I might try to get my kid to access that for AP Chem.

So the benefit of using a MCPS teacher is they know the curriculum and what they’re looking for. Ask for opinions on the teachers from the tutor list and choose from there.

Post on your neighborhood list serve if you have one. A lot of HS kids, mine included, tutor but will not post their names on a public forum.

One other thing about tutors - what is the average going rate? I am looking at the list of tutors on Wyzant and their hourly rates seem quite high. I see some that are much lower but it makes me question how good they are.

I was given a list of three or four and only 1 replied to my email. I was rather surprised the others couldn’t even muster a sorry but I can’t help. We opted for Wyzant based on creds (public school teacher in subject) and many repeat hours of tutoring (ie customers that kept going back for more sessions).
