Ok, thank you everyone. We can easily fly back to any NY airport and would not be upset about spending one night in Montreal so will stick with it.

Since it's one ticket they would put you on the next flight assuming there are available seats (maybe not a 100% good assumption in peak summer). You should have access to United flights on that route as well as their partner. Also consider flights to LGA/JFK if those are available, not sure where your end destination is. But if I lived in say Bethesda and had a flight to Dulles, but missed it, and the next flight was to BWI and it was a 3 hour longer wait to Dulles, I'd take the BWI flight, assuming my car wasn't at Dulles.

They will rebook you for free if you miss the connection. But you'll have to wait until there are open seats on a flight to your destination. It's not guaranteed that this will be the same day.

And it's not legal according to Air Canada (who I assume is operating the flights). I am very surprised you were offered this itinerary as a bookable ticket, are you sure it's only 50 minutes? This says you need at least 70 minutes to connect International--->US at Montreal (YUL):

Is it United? They are really good about seating with your kids. You can download Hopper and put in your flights and it will predict the prices and tell you to book or wait.

It’s been a long time since I’ve booked international flights. I booked 4 economy basic nonstop flights on United for from New York to Athens in July 2023 for $900 a piece. I’m cheap so it’s more than I wanted to pay but seems reasonable for nonstop and summer? Welcome any thoughts since I have 24 h to cancel!
