No public school celebrates Halloween or Christmas anymore. It's Book Day and Winter Holiday.![]()
Or birthdays. Our school stopped celebrating birthdays this year. No Halloween, no birthdays. Teachers aren’t even allowed to read books to the kids about Halloween. It kind of stinks - those shared experiences help build a cohesive culture and MCPS is cutting all that out.
Some schools don’t do Valentine’s Day because it is a “Christian holiday”.

I have 3 kids with IEP and I have been struggling taking them to all weekly therapies and on top of that dealing with insurance, IEP meetings, specialist appointment, medication, and behavior problems. I also work full time at office. English is not my first language, and I really have no time & energy to do extra because I am struggling with time already. My house is a big mess.
I wish I could step up, but I can't handle it.
Looks like the other 20 or so sets of parents feel the same. So make your peace with no parties or extra celebrations, or find a way to make it work for you to step up.
