I do think the quality is particularly good this year -- you could tell in the technical which was not particularly difficult but the results universally looked good. Often there are a number of bakers who clearly know how to bake but are not very good at making their bakes look appealing because they are used to baking for a home crowd that is much less likely to care. I sense that this group might be more skilled at presentation across the board than in previous seasons, where there were often one or two standouts in this respect but also a number of people who were weak.
The thing about presentation with baking is that it's generally about a combination of giving sh*t, using the right tools, and taking your time. The first two are easy to screen for but the last is what throws so many people on GBBO because of the time crunch. It will be interesting to see if people continue to turn out good looking bakes moving forward because that could mean a group with good time management skills, which I personally prefer because I always feel that the drama derived from problems created by the tight timelines feels cheap. Take any skilled baker and give them 20 minutes less than they strictly need to make something, and they will also wind up giving you something looking runny, soft, cracked, or otherwise broken.
