This. My DS played in summer league for a FCYBL team out of our zip code. The coaches are holding a spot for him, hoping he will rejoin rather than stay with a team in our zip code. Also, another coach on one of the opposing teams "recruited" DS after a game to ask him to play with his opposing team in the fall under an exception.

FYI, DS is short but an experienced AAU player.

This is kinda ballsy . The coach just walked up to your family after the game and...talked you up? Right in front of his existing coach?

If they only have two teams, they will be really hard to break into unless your kid is a 6'4 athlete.

There was some controversy last year on here about that team, or maybe it was the year older. Do a search. I have girls so didn't really pay attention.

It was that team.

So the coach and rest of the AAU team live in the same zip code area thing?

Some teams have very large territories others have a couple of zip codes

Each team is allowed 2 exceptions. If they use those exceptions, they may do so for different reasons.

We moved into Fairfax over the summer so my kid hasn't played in this league. Is it common for kids to try out for teams that aren't in their zip code? I see they make exceptions, but wasn't sure how common that was? We have two different places we can go for tryouts that are assigned to our area but their doesn't seem to be anyway to tell which places are better, or which divisions the teams will play in?
