This. I only use a debit card because when I was young I was irresponsible with my credit card and it’s better than writing a check. (I know I am losing out on points/benefits of credit cards). If there is an unauthorized charge the bank take care of it.

I’ve been avoiding getting a debit card for years. But recently I wanted an ATM card for my Capital One account and they only have a combined ATM/ Debit Card option. It does make me nervous carrying it around due to theft. Is this common for banks these days?

I refused a debit card when my bank offered it to me. I do not use a Debit card to take money out from an ATM.

I insisted that the bank gives me an ATM card that cannot be used like a credit or a debit card. I have put a daily limit of $300 on it. The last thing I would want is some person clears out my entire bank account using the Debit card.

If I need more cash (very rare in my suburban neighborhood) I will visit the bank and get it from the teller. But really who uses cash nowadays? Even my cleaner is paid via zelle.

It is all I use.

Yes, I still carry my debit card but I only use it at the bank when I use their ATM machine. I used to use my debit cart a lot but started using my credit card instead when they started giving me "cash back".

I use a debit card. I actually only got a cc after over a decade of not having one, in 2020. It's safer from the standpoint of not charging more than you can afford to pay off at the end of the month.

You can sign up for the bank system to send you a text or email each time there is a transaction on the card. Same for credit card. This notification is very useful.

Just throwing out there that the Ally app has settings where you can disable certain uses of your debit card. For example, I have all international transactions disabled. You can also disable by product category although this assumes the transaction will be coded correctly.

Debit cards are inherently less safe than credit cards. The Credit Card Act of 2009 provides significant protections for the users of credit cards. Note that identity theft is now one of the biggest industries worldwide. Protect yourself. The CCA gives you a lot of built in protections for credit cards. There are minimal protections for debit card users. If you use a debit card, make sure that the debit card is linked to an account that is NOT your primary bank account. If your debit card is stolen and money is withdrawn, the money is most likely gone unless you catch it quickly. So, you don't want to give identity theft thieves access to all of your money and your primary account.

You have to ask bank for the larger withdrawal amount (for safety sake)? In case you get car jacked or house invaded? Anyone think about this? I usually carry my card but these days…i’m thinking I shouldn’t carry a debit card at all.
