It is illegal and dog ownership lately is like Lake Wobegon: every owner is a brilliant trainer, every dog is perfectly trained and every pedestrian wants a dog in their face.

It doesn't matter if you have a problem, or don't have a problem. Unleashed dogs unless in a contained park area where it is allowed - are illegal.

Totally agree. But it seems like most are untrained. It’s frustrating not to be able to take a walk without running into an untrained unleashed dog.

I don't have a problem with unleashed dogs per se. If you have trained your dog with a strong and it generally is not interested in other people or dogs, fine. Let the pup roam a bit.

My then-preschool age DS was attacked atop our long private pipe stem driveway by a neighbor’s roaming, family dog who was character as “harmless” by the owner.

I no longer exercise or go out for walks in our suburb and neighborhood due to the proliferation of off leash dogs. Worst places to run or exercise: Fairfax County neighborhood pocket parks. All serve as ersatz off leash dog parks.

Not OP but this is an ongoing problem for me. What can I do in the moment? Take a picture and call someone? Who to call and will they do anything?

I walk in a park where dogs are supposed to be leashed, but three different unleashed dogs (from three owners) jumped up on me today. Why do dog owners think this is ok? Why don’t they just leash the dogs or go to a dog park?
