Test scores for Engineering students are higher for math but not for verbal. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. But here’s the thing: on average, girls have much lower scores on math than verbal, and fewer girls are applying to engineering schools. So if you’re a girl applying to engineering, you have a better chance of getting in with a lower than average math score for the school than if you are a boy.

Not at all true. You need higher scores to get into Engineering. The average SAT score was 1464 for engineering in 2021 and 1447 for the college

That was when UVA went test optional. The year before that, the difference was 60 points, which is substantial. Fewer are probably getting accepted test optional to engineering.

Acceptance rates don’t reveal the quality of the applicant pool. The facts are that the engineering school has a higher acceptance rate AND higher test scores. Most kids who apply to the engineering school are very smart, and the applicant pool is more consistently top rate.

You apply to a school. Majors are within a school.

You are quite wrong. It's a difficult program to get into. My DS was accepted to aerospace engineering at UVA, Purdue and Georgia Tech. It was not easy. He picked UVA.

Engineering undergrads have higher standardized test scores than A&S by some margin.

They don’t do that.

You apply to the school you’re interested in, and you get into that one or none. But it’s really not any harder to get into the engineering school than the arts & sciences school anyway. It’s not like Tech - it’s a tough admit all around.

The good thing is that girls apply to engineering in smaller numbers so that could actually help.
