What would be the benefit of that for APS?

We have excess capacity at elem and middle school so maybe move to k-6 ; 7-9 model?

Of course turning HB into high school only would free up 300 high school capacity for a lot less effort.

You’re talking about something different than I believe pp was suggesting. Either way, what you suggested is a permanent change to address a temporary problem. When the current cohorts of MS/ES move into high school, overcapacity in HS will get relief while the next cohort coming up might be too much for ES capacity.

DP. APS leadership has taken this approach for a decade, saying that this is just a temporary problem and now we've had an entire generation of children who have been educated in sub-optimal overcrowded settings. Population started rising in 2006 and really began to accelerate around 2013, and they spent at least until 2018 or 2019 saying "oh this is temporary" and not even realistically pursuing solutions. They refused to put a 4th high school at the Kenmore site. They refuse until the cows come home to make HB as overcrowded as the other high schools (you know, equity? let all suffer equally?).

You’re reading an awful lot into my post. I support adding more capacity at the high school level, but that’s separate from realigning grade levels between schools. Can you imagine how much people would lose their minds if every five years they not only redrew boundaries but also reevaluated whether current fifth graders would stay in ES or move to MS the following year? It would be chaos.

What does low income housing have to do with it?

But if so many people are leaving that should help overcrowding? Are you pulling a Yogi Bera?

Are enough people leaving to actually help overcrowding? Unless larger amounts of families leave and there aren't as many entering APS, it's going to be overcrowded at some schools at some levels.

Yes and no. The system lost students, but it remains to be seen how many return over the next year or two. It's still a big system.

Some schools, namely wealthy northern schools like Jamestown or Tuckahoe, have lots of space. Plenty of other schools are as crowded as ever. High school will be a mess for a long time to come.

Middle school is down 1000 students since 2018. So high school should be okay for the near term. But elementary was down only 600 students over twice as many grades (k-5 vs 6-8) so if it resumes growing trends return fast.

Yes. They have expanded elementary and middle school capacity. All they did for high school was XL W-L and pray that ATech draws enough students to keep things not terrible.

The 4th high school will be desperately needed in 5 years but won’t be here.
