If you need to sell a house, can you rent temporarily ?

Straight from the horse’s mouth

The statutory requirements say nothing about finances (or that a college age student needs to prove financial independence).

“Under the Code of Virginia, Section 23.1 Chapter 5, a financially dependent applicant shares the domicile status of their supporting parent.”

Yes, a student would lose in-state status if parent moves to another state. Would recommend waiting until your youngest starts last year of college before moving.

Her DD would then need to prove to the school that she financially independent (i.e. she earns enough income to demonstrate residency on her own).

Do they ask each year?

Then wouldn’t every OOS student do that and IS tuition?

Not sure what the precise requirements are but UVA’s In State questionnaire goes back years asking residence, license, voting district, state tax paid, etc. So the girls may be able to satisfy residency, but the typical OOS student could not.

If you leave the state, the student loses instate tuition one year later.

It doesn’t matter your history. It matters where you live in the moment. If you leave Virginia, you are no longer a resident of Virginia.

You have to have your mail and bills delivered to your Virginia address. If you move to Maryland, you're not a Maryland resident anymore; so it would affect tuition

For in-state tuition, I mean?

Lived in Virginia for 27 years. DD in second year at UVA and second DD applying for colleges now.

For a variety of reasons I may prefer to move to Maryland sooner rather than later. If I did that while my kids are in Virginia universities, does that affect their in-state tuition status?

I am a widower do it’s just me.
