Bumping this thread. Anyone know of any private middle schools that offer German? Preferably in DC. GIS not an option because my child would be entering after 5th and is not fluent.

Someone in our neighborhood is taking a school bus marked “German School” daily. The parents both are American; we met them at the neighborhood picnic. I do not think there are any native speakers at home.

German grammar is complex and there are 3 “genders” for words. It is not an easy language to learn.

AATG and the German Pedagogical Exchange Service cooperate on a highly competitive free (German government pays for it) summer 1-month exchange for selected US HS students to visit Germany. This has a very small number of slots. The first hurdle is the recommendation from one’s German teacher. Then there is a second unscheduled telephone interview in German as a 2nd filter.

Shocked more public schools don’t offer this. German universities are FREE. (Yes, you have to pay for healthcare- the same as you would here but no fees for international students.

Not OP but we checked British International and had conflicting answers. One could maybe pursue German in secondary school independently and at one's own cost - becomes unclear after that. WIS may have some options too. Maret offered one class via the Malone Network. Waldsee (summer program through Concordia College in MN) offers HS credit. We are threading this needle too.

You should also check out the German language school (at the German International School). They have a pretty robust German language program there on the weekends.

OP here. We would consider MD private schools but NoVa schools would be too far from NW DC. Not willing to relocate.

Not sure if you have a DS or a DD, but Georgetown Prep has an excellent German teacher. Last year her classes put on a German culture day for the school that was fun (and delicious!).

Since I've not been able to find DC public schools with German as a language option, we are considering going private but having an equally difficult time finding German as a course option. So far, I've only found it at Waldorf. Are there more options to consider? We're in DC but willing to consider MD private schools. TIA!
