Huge school yes, but where did you find a small school in FCPS?

There are 25 high/secondary schools in FCPS. In some years the number of freshmen at Oakton has been above 700 and among the top two or three in terms of 9-12 enrollment. So it’s not hard to find a smaller school in FCPS.

When we were looking for house, we seriously considered Oakton High because there were lots of houses walking distance from the school. For us, that would have been a big advantage for our children to be able to walk home after school activities, sports games, etc. The downside is that it is a huge school.

No more kids bringing stun guns to attack freshmen in the bathrooms?

Don’t know anyone who would need to get on 66 to get there… we also would take Waples to Oakton to Jermantown… We’re zoned for Oakton because we live in Oakton. We don’t live in Chantilly, though their high school is a little closer.

Academic pressure cooker? Only if you want it to be. Take APs, don't take APs, nobody cares . There are certainly kids who take seven APs as a senior as well as those who take free periods.

There is plenty of a sense of community, not sure why that would be any different than other schools since students join clubs, sports, go to plays, etc. The distance to school does not prevent students from doing these things. I know walkers to school as well as students at the farthest reaches of the boundary up Fairfax County Parkway that are active in band, sports, and robotics.

The renovation is almost complete, just working on new tennis courts and a few inside things. All seniors who wanted parking this year got it and some juniors as well. No trailers remain.

They do not have to get on 66. My kids take Waples Mill to Oakton Road to Jemantown to Blake to Sutton. It takes them about 25 minutes to get to school.

There’s a far amount of resentment of Oakton among a few Chantilly parents and students, so take the criticisms with a grain of salt, OP.

It is fair to say that the boundaries for Oakton are kind of weird and that many Oakton-zoned kids actually live closer to other high schools. So maybe not the strongest sense of community. On the other hand, Oakton just got an expensive renovation.

It is one of the more well regarded HS in FCPS.
