I should add that this included crossing a busy street with a traffic light and crossing guard, which can take several minutes.

Parking for open house =/= parking for drop off. Much fewer cars for drop off. I only live .5 from our elementary school, and I will often drive, park a block from school, walk my child in, then walk back to my car and drive to work. At our school the doors open 20 mins before school starts, so I time it to park 25 mins before school starts, and I have never had a problem.

Depending on your school it might not save much time to do car drop off. Some have pretty epic lines and you can't just drop a Kindergartener off without the staff member opening the door (usually)

We’re walking our K kid 0.5 miles to school. Granted, it’s not uphill and mostly flat. But it takes us 10 minutes at a normal pace.

More likely, they didn’t park by your house because there was plenty of parking closer.

Unless your child has special needs, they are capable of doing to the walk in the less than 30 min. We have a hilly just over .25 mile walk to elementary school with two significant intersections, and even when my kids were in K it took less than 10 min door to door. If you don’t want to walk, then just own that instead of making it out to be an impossibility.

All kinders are relatively short. Unless she’s half the height of her peers, or developmentally delayed, it shouldn’t be a special circumstance.

Correct. It has never been .25 miles!

A sloth could walk a mile round trip in an hour. Even if you kid is slow on the way there, why would it take you as long on the way back?

The more you walk it the quicker it will be (increased strength/endurance, growth, loss of novelty.

My kid is going into 6th and it’s been a mile to qualify for bus service (unless extenuating circumstances) since before he started K. We had a half mile walk and I drove on rainy days.

We walk a mile in 15 mins. Up hill.

30 mins for a half mile walk? That seems excessively slow. The walk zone for elementary is you get a bus if more than a mile from school.

They expanded walk zones for our neighborhood to allow social distancing during pandemic. Did they shrink them back?

We have a 0.5 mile walk (mostly up hill to school) for our kinder, and we are going to likely drive. That walk takes about 30 minutes for a kinder, and we have to get to work so I can’t take an hr for school drop off.

Didn’t it used to be 0.25 mi for elementary school?
