Our day care didn’t even have swings or bouncers.

It wouldn’t bother be. If my newborn fell asleep in a swing or bouncer I left her there. If the staff and babies/toddlers seemed happy and it was clean and kids looked cared for I wouldn’t rule it out.

It won't prevent the baby from not breathing momentarily, but a fast acting caregiver can prevent the child from dying. A child doesn't die the very second they can't breath. Not a game I'd want played at daycare, though.

Good plan to keep looking, OP.

OP Here- thanks. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overreacting or being unrealistic I'll keep looking!

Absolutely not. This is a completely unsafe sleeping arrangement. Was this place actually licensed? It sounds like a shady home day care. Any licensed centers with properly trained staff will know that infants cannot safely sleep in swings or bouncers. It’s called positional asphyxia. It can kill them. If the center is NAEYC Accredited this is a violation of the accreditation program standards. A high quality child care program will not have kids sitting around in bouncers and swings. Keep looking. You may have to spend more than what you want to to ensure your infant is in a safe child care arrangement.

Wouldn't really bother me, tbh. It was several years ago, but my son's daycare definitely did that.

We had our first in a small center that did allow naps in swings. I was fine with this as our child would not sleep in a crib or basinet (we tried for 3 months and got hardly any sleep before learning to safely co-sleep at home.) I trusted the caretakers and the ratio was 1:2. Some centers will have sleep checks for infants and will make sure they are ok every few minutes while sleeping.

The are well aware it is not permitted due to the risks of positional asphyxiation.

I didn't tour any daycares that had bouncers.

I wouldn't worry about it. My kid slept in a swing often. She had reflux and it helped her. I understand the concern but also think in a place with an appropriate teacher student ratio your baby would be very likely to be observed continuously and therefore unlikely to get into trouble in the swing.

Swing entanglements are problematic with older babies who wake up unobserved and attempt to shift positions.

Without a swing or other device and without the ability to put babies to sleep on their tummies most babies (and their parents) would get very little sleep in the first six months.

I know babies are safest on their backs laying flat but it's very very hard to get them to fall asleep this way.

There should be NO swings or bouncers in daycares. Period.

These contraptions are creating container baby syndrome. They delay healthy development.

First kid due in 3 months, I did my first in person day care tour today and really liked the place (and it's in my budget)- it's a small center with about 15 kids. My only concern is that there was an infant sleeping in a bouncer type reclined chair and when I asked if the infants napped in cribs or the other devices around the room, I was told that sometimes if they fall asleep in the swings, they cry when moved to the cribs so they let them sleep in the swings/ bouncers. This isn't normal, right? Even in daycare when they are being watched they should be sleeping in safe sleep environments, right? It sucks bc the place was a good fit otherwise.
