Just make sure it’s not outlet-only items, make sure it’s from an actual store (I buy stuff online and it’s shipped from an actual store) I got my son a Zegna suit for $750. Off 5th is more likely to have Canali, Armani etc.

Don't do suit supply. Just not the quality you would look for at $1000. Seems to be targeting the market at a bit above Br and Jcrew, but without being "high quality".

For a one-time purchase, my experience is made-to-measure or custom or bespoke aren't going to look as good as a high quality off the rack suit that is tailored. Fabrics end up not lying quite right, little things that when suits are being made on an assembly line, they don't have the same problem.

Go with a very dark navy suit. That color works best for both work and social occasions like weddings. Dark gray suits often look boring and cheap.

For one suit, either solid dark gray or solid navy. No patterns if you are only getting one, even pinstripes are better as a second or third suit.

I'd be an advocate of spending a bit more to get something good -- made-to-measure with a second set of pants from a reputable brand, and you are basically done for a decade if you only wear suits occasionally. I think this can be done for a bit more than your stated budget, and it will look vastly better than off-the-rack. It's a totally different animal, even if you have to compromise a bit on material quality to make the budget work, the great fit outweighs that.

If you go off the rack, tailoring is critical, but there is only so much than tailoring can do so you need a cut that works reasonably well for him to start with. If he's in good shape that shouldn't be too hard. Also you can't always trust the salesman, they want to move product and may not care how things look the way you will. If it doesn't look great, move on. There are lots of brands, and they vary more than you might think.

Try to get an extra pair of pants though -- they wear out sooner and have a rougher use case in general (often the jacket just hangs up on a chair or something most of the days it is worn), so you get way more use out of the suit that way.

My DS buys all his suits at Hugo Boss. The standalone stores that just carry mens stuff. I think the suits are probably just under $1000, and then happy to fit his body like it was custom tailored for him. But really nice quality suits, huge step up from BR, Jcrew etc.

Another good option is Bloomingdales - same price point as Hugo Boss, but other brands.

The other recs on here are much lower price points. Macys may have a couple in stock in higher brands, but not a big selection. If he's looking for a nicer suit, avoid those places.

A few years ago, i did some research for DH and was pretty pumped up on Suit Supply. He bought a couple suits there and i would never admit to DH, but i don't like them at all. I don't like the fit and the quality seems way below Hugo Boss. And the third time he wore one of them, the whole seam down the middle of the back burst when he leaned over. While he was on a business trip. Super embarrassing. So i wouldn't recommend (though others seem to love it).

My husband (early 40's) works for a California-based tech company remotely and was previously in a government role that did not require a suit. He currently does not own one. His birthday is coming up and he has asked me to help him find him a suit. I am a bit lost for where to start.

We are attending a wedding in October and he would like a suit that he can wear for the occasion, but also for other formal occasions like a holiday party and work events.

He is not interested in a suit from J.Crew or Banana Republic and is looking for something a bit higher end quality wise. Besides Nordstrom, where do men typically shop for suits? Budget is around $1000 but flexible.
