I lived in that neighborhood for a long time. There are regular shootings there, it only makes "the news" when 3 or more folks or shot. Honestly, having lived in DC since the mid-90s, this is pretty par for the course.

However, it's nice to see the folks from the midwest who have joined our city worrying about anarchy.

It’s so ignorant to act as if the district is super dangerous. Yes, homicides are up and the unfortunate truth is that many of the homicide victims are street-involved young men and are due to neighborhood beef. It’s horrific of course but if that doesn’t describe you, you are unlikely to be a victim of a violent crime. The district needs to be much more to prevent these beefs and violent crime- cracking down on illegal weapons, more violence interrupters, and stricter punishment. And we need to do more to prevent the circumstances that lead to becoming street involved in the first place- poverty, lack of educational opportunities, etc. It’s all connected.

But lady from the suburbs who is wondering if it’s unsafe to walk around- it’s not.

the area on N Capitol between Florida and New York Ave has been open air drug market since the 90s (at least). I remember multiple shooting there even in the early 2010s (DC's crime nadir).

If this had happened in Cherrydale, Lyon Park, Bethesda or Glen Echo, this thread would be 15 pages long by now.
