Because the money goes to the PTA, which goes to school activities and kid-related events. That's why there's a mark-up. I've never bought any, but more power to those who do.

Do not mean to be rude. But you should really consider sending a pair for change of cloths after PE along with a deodorant.
You do not want teachers to have unbearable time in classrooms with all the sweat and body odor which will take focus away from academics.
