Fwiw dealers were offer 5k trade in and I sold it for 7300. Ad/notary cost like $200

I was checking the value of our last car on KBB and a window popped up saying I could take it to X dealer and sell it for a guaranteed price of $10k. It was close enough to what I was hoping to get so I just went for it. So simple and fast. They handled all the paperwork. I could have gotten an extra $1k or maybe $2k if I had done a private sale, but this was worth it for the simplicity.

I just sold a vehicle privately. I originally made the mistake of including my phone number, and got bombarded for two days by scammers, some more obvious than others. I took the number down and did a bunch of back and forth with legit parties over the routed email system. Left work early to show it, met the first buyer, brought him to our house, spent about an hour going over everything while he looked at it.

And I did get the best price possible, but it was more hassle than when I just sold a car to CarMax or when I traded one in to the dealership.

See it on nextdoor.com. Easy and safe.

Most money:
1- Private sales (Craigslist, FB marketplace, etc..)

If there is nothing wrong with the car, sell it private party on Craigslist.

If there are issues, sell it to Carmax, Vroom, or Carvana. Get quotes and see who gives you the most. We will be doing this with our van in another couple of weeks.

Least money: Carmax and/or dealer

We just went through this when we were trying to trade in a car. I think if we had been patient and more flexible, selling it privately would have been the most profitable. We were not in that position, so we traded it in. For comparison, it was a 2011 Subaru Outback- I think we could have gotten about $6,500 privately, about $4,500 from car max/carvana, and $5,000 trade-in.
