We got one too and I just researched why. They are Pandemic EBT benefits for this past school year. All of the APS schools appear to have qualified. If you got benefits, it was because you had a kid who had a covid-related absence last school year while they qualified for free/reduced meals. But since everyone qualified for free/reduced meals last year, everyone who had a covid-related school absence qualifies for some level of benefits.

Here are the tiers of benefits, which appear to be based on number of consecutive days absent and with separate benefits allocations for each period of absence:

Tier A (1-5 days): $21.30
Tier B (6-15 days): $71.00
Tier C (16 or more days): $127.80

In our case, one of our kids missed 7 days of school due to covid, and also missed three days of school for a non-covid illness that required a negative covid test to return to school before the end of the quarantine period. We got benefits totaling $92.30, which equals one Tier A absence plus one Tier B absence.

I cannot find anything to suggest we are not entitled to this money under the program (even though we would never qualify for FARMS based on income), so we are planning to use it to buy food to donate to AFAC.

My kid is at a title 1 school and we didn’t get one.

Did all APS schools qualify? That’s the only way this makes sense. Does anyone know what the card “does”? Is it loaded with a certain amount of money?

+1. North Arlington. Is it because everyone got free lunch last year so that automatically signs us all up for the benefit though none of us are eligible?
