I'm retired. At my age I don't have to get away from "stress" or deal with kids. So I relax at my home every day. When I go away, it's more for touring . . . to see new places and experience different things. The beach is great and we go there too, but not for as long (maybe a few days).

I agree they’re super boring. People around here love them, though, since the beaches are so close. I prefer seeing new places and visiting cities or national parks.
I don’t think it’s “cultural” thing, PP, so much as a regional one. I grew up in the Midwest and no one took beach trips every year. Some did do lake houses, though.

OP: I think it's a cultural thing. Your coworkers may divide their vacation time into relaxing (beach) and sightseeing (new places). Are you by chance from another country originally? I had an Asian friend who seemed to want to cover a lot more than we would usually do in a week long trip. Fun, but not relaxing.
Agree this is cultural. Part of my family is from another part of the world and they are into “touring” as they call it and covering as much as possible

The most important thing for a beach trips is the kids (elementary/younger) like it. It is fun for them and is easy and relaxing for the parents.
Other fun and exotic places can wait until they are older.

A lot of people do both. Two different types of vacations. Doing nothing type and doing stuff type.
Beach vacations are easy and fun.

We take vacations we enjoy as a family. That includes cities, foreign countries, national parks, and beached (US or otherwise). At the beach, we like the ocean and my kids like playing in the sand. We do not enjoy road trips but wiuld jot question why others do.

I’m not a family beach fan. The sunscreen the towels the suits the stuff, the schleping if you don’t have a house right Ont he beach, oh and making sure the kids don’t drown. I’m with you OP, I’d rather go somewhere and see new things.

Life is hectic and overplanned. Our beach trips are the opposite. This is the one week each year that allows me to truly relax. Up with the sun, followed by a bike ride, and then a day of enjoying the ocean. I look forward to it each year, especially during the most stressful days at work.

I love the beach for a week or two in the summer. We go to a family beach house, so don’t use it as our only vacation. I always add in another 1-2 week trip that’s more of an adventure and where we are active. It’s important to me that my kids see a lot of different places.

Beach trips are EASY.
I love an international or adventurous domestic trip, I really do. But my kids are 4, 3, and 0, and it's not worth it to try to spend the effort and money on "more exciting" trips at those ages. (We did travel internationally pre-covid with the baby when we just had one kid.)
So for now we go to the beach for a week. As they get older we'll probably continue to go to the beach for a week, plus add in "more exciting" trips.
But the beach is calming and relaxing, the kids love it, it's super easy for me. Judge if you want. It's great to spend a week at the beach though.

Yes, a beach trip is usually relaxing. You play in the ocean with your kids, lay out in the sun reading a book, eat seafood and drink wine, walk around town, get ice cream, go to mini golf, arcade, boardwalk, etc. It’s awesome.
