Would still recommend getting the more expensive stuff if affordable for your family. Better in the long term. And maybe think about getting a clean cleanser and moisturizer too for skin care if starting make up.

Neutrogena makes a really nice tinted moisturizer which isn't heavy like a foundation. It also has SPF in it and other good things for your skin. A 7th grader doesn't need to wear full foundation but a tinted moisturizer provides a light coverage. IT cosmetics also makes a nice CC cream but it is more expensive.

100% Pure makeup brand. My daughter has multiple allergies, including anything coconut-derived, and can use the blush and eye liner without issue. CoverGirl LashBlast is a surprisingly clean mascara that is available almost everywhere.

Not sure how clean they are, but I love ColourPop, Glossier, Tarte, and Thrive.

You can check ingredients and specific products in the environmental working group website. She should know, though, that "clean" doesn't necessarily mean it's good for your skin and body.

For a 7th grader, I would take her to Ulta. They have brands like ColourPop, Elf, Morphe.

Since she's young, I wouldn't consider a full face of make-up or foundation, so no need to spend money on high-end foundations.

I recommend Ulta vs. Sephora for teens because they have a mix of drugstore and high-end, so a consultant there can help navigate clean drugstore brands. Knowing one’s skin type is important, and a consultant can help find skin tones and undertones.

Thank you for the suggestions. Full face of makeup isn't happening, but a bit of mascara, lip tint and some concealer are enough to dip her toes in. At this age we agree with PP that she shouldn't be using a ton of product on her face so for now I think we'll skip foundations and eyeliners.

Ilia if she wants foundation. It’s light and they have a lot of colors. Doesn’t break my girls out as long as they don’t forget to wash their face.

Go to Sephora and just ask them. Look at lip tint, highlighter, liquid eyeliner (this is ubiquitous with this age group lol) and mascara

Sephora has a ton of clean brands now and even a "generic" Sephora clean brand that's less expensive.

Physicians formula has some organic/clean products that are very cost effective. In fact, I think their mascara is superior to many department store name brands. You do have to check labels though b/c the whole line is not clean.

My favorites are Ilia, Tarte, Kossa, Juice

But i wouldn't get those for my 7th grader. They are expensive and you are setting a high bar that will be hard for them to keep up when they need to finance their own products. 7th graders shouldn't be wearing a full face of makeup. It isn't good for your skin, no matter how clean the ingredients are. Personally, I'd limit the makeup to mascara, some dual lip/cheek tinted glosses or stains, some fun shimmery stuff if they want. Drug store stuff is fine for this.

Our 7th grader has expressed interest in starting to dabble in makeup. I know there was a long thread this summer on teen cosmetics but wanted to focus on brands considered clean or free of some of the more bothersome chemicals. I’m willing to buy the first round of a starter kit of sorts since I expect this to be more expensive than drugstore brands and make DD buy from there, but have never paid much attention to good cosmetics myself.

Any recommendations for particular brands that DD can see in person at Sephora or Ulta, besides having to order via the MLM Beautycounter or is that really a good option at this age?
