I joined because they advocate for rights of seniors. That's very important considering every group benefits from lobbying, protesting and media efforts.

I didn’t pay attention to it at 50 but signed up at 60. It’s inexpensive and there are plenty of savings that make it worth it.

I think generally they're the same. I haven't had AAA in a long time, since my car insurance covers roadside assistance, so I haven't compared, but it seems to me when you're looking at hotel room rates, they list AAA/AARP together as if they're the same option.

^^ same, one hotel stay for a couple of nights and the discount more than covers your annual membership. I did find Costco's car rental prices to be better though

Membership is so cheap, I definitely got my money's worth back in hotel discounts when I was traveling and staying in chain hotels a lot pre-covid. Not sure it would be worth it if you don't travel much.

I turned 50 last year and got the dreaded invitation from AARP. Straight into the trash.

51 is coming around. I opened it this year. $16 to join and looks like decent discounts on things.

Is it worth it or does it just overlap with, say, AAA?
