It's when you see someone walking through your neighborhood with an Amazon package under their arm. Is it a package thief or are you about to ruin some poor black man's life who is just walking home from the Amazon locker at 7-11?

Most of us (minority and middle class), want more, but accountable cops. Not a bunch of unaccountable white supremacists.

A very naive question:
Do the victims of a repeat offender sue the government or DA office because they let the criminal out again and again until someone got killed?
In another word, can the judge or DA be held accountable?

Believe it or not, "Wards 7 & 8" are not a monolith.

A: Some people want more police right now no matter what.

B: Some people want more police but only if it can be done in a socially responsible manner that will make efforts to address violent criminals without abuse, indiscriminate killings, and ruining lives unnecessarily.

C: Some people are fine the way things are.

D: Some people want fewer police.

E: Some people want police out of their communities entirely.

As any intelligent person would expect, the fringes have the fewest proponents (but often the most vocal) and the middle has the most. If you want to know this Ward 7 resident's opinion, it's option B.

This isn't Wards 7 & 8, but similar dynamics -- a young man was shot in the head in the middle of a busy food court during the day at PG Plaza yesterday. Just horrific. Speaking to friends in PG county (almost all AA), every one of them wants more law enforcement to prevent and punish this kind of thing. No one wants this kind of violence in their community.

The more nuanced positions I hear want better relationships with the police, more local community members on the police force who will be able to bridge the gap in trust between the community and the police force. I don't know anyone who says "defund the police" except hardcore activists. Most community members are frustrated with the police but not because they oppose police on principle but because the police are ineffectual at actually protection people here. We see how law enforcement responds to threats in white, rich communities and we notice how different that is from how they respond here. Racism, corruption, and disengagement ARE problems. You can't just say "more police" without addressing those issues. But there is such disregard and distrust for black people, even among black cops, that it can feel futile.
