I started playing the piano at age six, in 1978. I would have LOVED to be able to have all of the online options that are available to kids these days. I taught myself everything I could from books I found in the library, in addition to taking lessons from a teacher with a Master's Degree in Music, but I could have taught myself everything at home if I had had internet back in the day. It's awesome, how much you can teach yourself these days without even leaving your home. My fiancé has been teaching himself to play the guitar over the past year, and he's taken advantage of all the lessons that are available online. He's much farther ahead than he would be if he was only getting a couple of lessons a month from a teacher, because he would have to schedule those lessons around work and the rest of his busy life. He can take a lesson whenever he wants, doing it this way. Definitely take advantage of everything you can find, OP. There are lots of free lessons available online, in addition to the ones you have to pay for. Take advantage of everything. If your kid isn't interested, don't push it. No one had to tell me to practice. I lived and breathed my music, and the piano was my first love. My mother tried to force my sister to learn to play, because I enjoyed it so much, and she finally realized that if the music is not in your soul, there's no point in wasting your time or your money on it. Either you're born with it or you aren't.

Useless waste of time for my 6 y/o beginner last year. The hand positions are very difficult to see via the camera and this difficult to correct.

It will not be good if your kid is a beginner. My kids switched to virtual piano lesson due to pandemic but they’d learned for 1 and 3 years.

What source are you considering, Op? What name?

We did it for awhile early in the pandemic. But we had an existing relationship with the teacher. It was okay. He had a position the camera so he could see her hands and posture. I was also impressed how well he could hear when she made a mistake. But its much less engaging. Maybe if you're really trying to save money you could alternate in person and video lessons.

My 12 year old's piano teacher recently moved out of the area and we are all very sad as he was great (like super great, and my kid cried a lot when we found out). We are going to try doing remote lessons with him still once Summer break is over, but if your kid is just getting started I think in person lessons would be best.

How old is your child? Depends on the child whether they can listen and follow closely to instructions and their fine motor skills etc. We started DC 6 with online classes during covid and we feel it worked well to learn the basics. My child has since moved on to advanced lessons and doing in-person. We think our kid would do well with either option (obviously in-person is better). If the kid is younger I would hesitate to start online.

I’ve played piano since I was 5, and my dad has played for most of his life. I think lessons in person are key. The teacher has to be able to assess your kid’s posture, finger position, etc. While it might be possible to do that online, I think nothing can replace being in person.

A piano teacher has this as an option and it's $50 cheaper.
What do you think if you've ever learned piano?
Part of me thinks it could work but then another part knows that nothing beats IRL.
To clarify, this option is LIVE not a pre-recorded lesson.
