Wow - I'm not going to lie, that's pretty crazy. If it works for you, fine, but I really really cannot imagine tracking my college kid with enough detail to know if he gets out of class early. That's a lot of watching. My DS texts usually every day and he often tells me where he is going - walking to class, mom, but I don't know that level of detail. I also pay for my kid to go to college but he is responsible and doing well - I want him to be independent and have no need for that type of oversight.


I call it monitoring my investment.

OP here. No helicopter here. My child and I talk almost every day and she shares her life with us. She ASKS us for advice on her schedule. We don’t meddle or control. We let her share with us what she wants. We keep up with it so we know not to text during class. Yes the communication is both ways.

Her full time job is to do college. That being said she did look at a part time job, but her sorority duties and her FOMO made her decide to wait until the spring when she has just 12 hours left of core. She works during long breaks and all summer, so she will wait until next semester. She has a disability which allows her to register in one of the first rounds. Believe me, she would rather not have the disability but if offered she does take advantage of that perk.

I have no idea what my kid's schedules are nor do I care. Full load of classes? Yes. All grades A or B? Yes. That is all I care to know about.

My kid is in a program with a very prescribed course of study but got good class timings and what sounds like a fun elective in the one free slot.

Last spring, my now sophomore was able to curate a schedule which allowed her Fridays off. Her first classes were Wednesday. At her Thursday class, the professor announced it would be hybrid and only meet in person on Tuesdays. So with two online classes (to satisfy the core requirements), my kid only has to be on campus three days a week. Being four hours away, I asked if she would visit for long weekends, but I didn’t get an answer. I didn’t expect to, but I can have wishful thinking.

Anyone else’s kid get a sweet schedule?
