My sister is a pediatric neuropsych. She says the correct dose for a child is less than 1mg. Start by cutting a 1mg gummy into quarters, and go up a quarter as needed. Rarely do children need a full 1mg. She also says it is very useful for specific sleep changes like daylight savings, travel, etc., but should not be used nightly for most neurotypical kids with normal sleep issues. You can build a tolerance and it can impact hormones. Obviously an individual decision for special needs cases. She also said it's very difficult to overdose, and even 10 mg isn't going to hurt a child. You really only have to worry when children get into an adult dosage bottle.

Commin for kids with autism to take melatonin daiky.

We do .5 for our daughter once in a while. It's not supposed to be a daily thing - studies have shown that there may be hormonal interferences. I am an adult and I take 5 MG a night.

I read that most people use way too much melatonin -- and the more you take the less effective it becomes.

It shouldn’t be an issue but even 2mg is really too high. We use Luna Kids and it only has .2mg per dose. Works like a charm.

No, it’s not a huge deal. But you should definitely use the lowest effective dose going forward so get the 2mg and give this bottle to a friend or save it to use yourself.
